For Hayley Mitchell, it all began with an unflattering picture taken at a friend’s wedding, but according to her, it was the motivation she needed to get on the right path towards a healthier lifestyle. Now, just 4 years later, Mitchell has lost more than half of her body weight and is set to become a personal trainer come September 1st.
Today we are going to take a look at her journey and hopefully her steadfast spirit can show you that anything is possible.
Back in November of 2012, Hayley had made the decision to join a gym and work on herself, hoping to lose extra weight and regain her confidence. However, it wasn’t always easy finding the motivation to head to the gym.
“The hardest part was walking in the doors. I felt embarrassed, but I did it and never looked back.”
The first thing she did when she signed up for the gym was hire a personal trainer to help her get started and work on her with her goals.
“I went home that day and cried, not because I was sad or embarrassed but more relief I think because I had finally started.”
Hayley had begun her journey towards a healthier body and felt the relief of just taking that first step, but it wasn’t always as easy.
The Hardest Part
After only three months of working with her personal trainer, Mitchell was down 22 pounds and starting to see real progress. However, it had come time to expand her training outside of just the gym.
“He gave me an eating plan to follow and made me write everything down. Now this was the hardest part if I’m honest.”
Hayley was having a hard time staying accountable to her goals and had to start writing down everything that she was eating in order to make sure she wasn’t getting off track.
In February of 2013, Hayley entered into a Body Transformation Challenge and was now following a strict diet and training twice a day! In the end, over the course of 12 weeks, she lost almost 40 pounds and told her personal trainer that she was done with these challenges.
But that wasn’t quite true.
In February of 2014, Hayley entered another challenge, this one lasting through May. Over the course of this period, she lost an additional 40 pounds and had become almost a completely different person.
“I couldn’t have been more pleased with my results and efforts.”
During the summer of that year, Mitchell underwent surgery to remove loose skin that she was tired of having. While she was doing this, she had to remain inactive for 16 weeks, which now had become incredibly difficult for a dedicated gym member like Mitchell.
“Now the gym had become my second home and I found it so hard to be still. I’m pretty sure I went in once a week just for a coffee so I could feel sort of ‘normal.’”
Once she had recovered from her surgery, Hayley decided to try one more body transformation challenge, only this time she intended to win.
And win she did. Hayley lost almost 40 more pounds and this time took home not only the local title for her gym, but the national title as well. Mitchell had set out time after time to achieve her goals and she finally had hit the mark she was looking for.
“Finally being recognized for everything I achieved was awesome, and I really worked my butt off for it, quite literally!”
Where are they Now?
Today, Hayley continues to inspire others with her story and soon will be starting as a personal trainer at her local gym, the very same place where she began her journey! We will now leave you with some final motivation from Hayley.
“Today is the start of a new week. I can sit and feel sorry for myself and dwell on the choices I made or I can get on the treadmill and start working towards the goals I have set myself with a fresh new focus and mindset.”
Keep Hayley in mind next time you head for the gym for that extra motivation, and if you want to follow along with her story, you can read more about it here.
